Moog Prodigy

Find out how you can control your Moog Prodigy with MIDI using Kenton MIDI Retrofit Kits or MIDI to CV converters

The Moog Prodigy doesn’t have MIDI, and the Mk1 Prodigy didn’t have any CV/S-Trig Sockets. The Mk2 Prodigy (serial number 8078 and above) did have CV/S-Trig sockets (marked KYBD IN/OUT and S-TRIG IN/OUT).

The options you have are:

  1. Mk1 or Mk2 Prodigy – Fit a MIDI Retrofit Kit
  2. Mk1 Prodigy – Fit a Socket Upgrade Kit for use with a MIDI to CV converter
  3. Mk2 Prodigy – Use existing sockets with a MIDI to CV converter, and optionally fit a Filter Socket Upgrade Kit for additional control

Fitting a MIDI retrofit or socket upgrade kit is a skilled job which should be undertaken only by a competent synth service engineer or fitted by us at our premises in Epsom, near London (UK customers only).

1. Fit a MIDI Retrofit Kit to your Moog Prodigy

You can fit a MIDI Retrofit Kit which will allow you to control your Prodigy directly using MIDI from your DAW, MIDI Sequencer or other MIDI controller. Our MIDI Retrofit Kit adds MIDI IN and THRU sockets.

2. Fit a CV/Gate/Trigger Socket Upgrade Kit to your Mk1 Moog Prodigy

If you want to control your Prodigy Mk1 using MIDI, then you will need a Socket Upgrade Kit, a MIDI to CV converter and Leads

Sockets
As there are no suitable sockets fitted to this model, you’ll need to get the Prodigy fitted with CV & Gate sockets.
Kenton make a 3 socket upgrade for this model which provides CV, Gate and Filter cutoff control sockets. This upgrade is available either as a kit for fitting by your own engineer, or fully fitted by us at our premises in London.

MIDI to CV converter
Use this link to see the range of Kenton converters suitable for this model:

Kenton MIDI to CV converters

Use the following settings on the converter for the Prodigy Mk1:

CV – The upgrade socket requires 1 Volt per Octave control. Set the CV select parameter to CV or Volts/Octave – this is the Kenton default
Gate/Trig – The upgrade socket requires a 5V gate signal – this is the Kenton default setting
Aux1/Filter – The upgrade socket requires a 0-10V analogue signal – this is the Kenton default setting

Leads
For connecting the socket upgrade to a Kenton converter, you will need 3 x 3.5mm to 3.5mm mono jack leads

3. Use a MIDI to CV Converter to control the existing CV/Gate/Trig sockets

If you want to control your Prodigy mk2 using MIDI, then you will need a MIDI to CV converter and Leads and optionally an additional socket for control of fiter cutoff frequency.

Sockets
The Prodigy Kk2 is already fitted with CV & Trig control sockets, which is all you need for control of the notes, however it could benefit from fitting an additional socket for control of the filter cutoff frequency. The two sockets fitted as standard are labelled as follows:

KBD IN/OUT – kbd in this case is a standard volt per octave input. This is a 1/4″ mono jack socket which should be connected to the CV output of a Kenton converter (set to CV). You will need a 3.5mm to 1/4″ mono jack lead for the connection. See leads section below.
S-TRIG IN/OUT – This is probably a 2 pin Cinch-Jones socket (2 flat pins) which should be connected to the Gate (trig) output of a Kenton converter set to S-Trig. You will need a 3.5mm to Cinch-Jones 2 pin lead for the connection. Alternatively it is possible that this is a 1/4″ mono jack socket in wich case you will need a 3.5mm to 1/4″ mono jack lead for the connection instead. See leads section below.

As mentioned above, Kenton make a 1 socket upgrade for this model which provides a filter cutoff control socket. This upgrade is available either as a kit for fitting by your own engineer, or fully fitted by us at our premises in London.

MIDI to CV converter
Use this link to see the range of Kenton converters suitable for this model:

Kenton MIDI to CV converters

Use the following settings on the converter for this model:

CV – This version requires 1 Volt per Octave control. Set the CV select parameter to CV or Volts/Octave – this is the Kenton default setting
Gate/Trig – This version requires s-trig with no pullup – this requires a change from the Kenton default
Aux1/Filter – The upgrade socket requires a 0-10V analogue signal – this is the Kenton default setting

Leads

If your Prodigy has the 2 pin Cinch Jones connector for trig, you will need:
1 x 3.5mm to 1/4″ mono jack lead
1 x 3.5mm to Cinch-Jones 2 pin
1 x 3.5mm to 3.5mm mono jack lead (for filter socket if fitted)

Alternatively, if your Prodigy has the 1/4″ jack connector for trig, you will need:
2 x 3.5mm to 1/4″ mono jack lead
1 x 3.5mm to 3.5mm mono jack lead (for filter socket if fitted)
